According to the article, the earliest Sarkozy could have arrived in Berlin was November 11 — two days later. Well, give the old guy a break. Maybe his memory isn’t what it used to be — I know mine isn’t. Still, I do remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news, and I’m not much younger than he is.

What cannot be permitted is that these crimes against humanity should be thrust down the memory hole because they embarrass former Communist leaders like Mr. Gorbachev and President Boris Yeltsin or the Western politicians who treated Communist collective dictatorships as “normal” or even “progressive” regimes. Our failure to examine the Communist past has fostered a moral climate in which the ideologies that justified dictatorship and terrorism are again presenting themselves for approval.
