From Colby Cosh in today’s National Post:
Some of this vital middle ground was located effectively by Hasan’s classmate at the Uniformed Services University, former Air Force officer Dr. Val Finnell. Lt.-Col. Finnell says that he and other students worried about Hasan, not because Islam is incompatible with being a good American, but because “he would frequently say that he was Muslim first and an American second. We questioned how somebody could be an officer in the military and swear allegiance to the constitution to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and have that type of conflict.”
Much of what he has to say I agree with, but — and it’s a big but — those on the right are the only ones who take Islam seriously. I know I do. I think Muslims are dead serious about their Dar al-Islam (House of Submission) bringing our Dar al-Harb (House of War) under their control. According to their Koran (and quoting Bruce Bawer), we are “destined to be governed by sharia and it will take war — holy war, jihad” to do so.
As for middle ground…How do you find any middle ground with an ideology that is bent on your complete and total submission?
Cosh’s final following paragraph raises another point I disagree with:
That was the question that should have gotten the attention of military authorities. And note that it would have been no different if the word “Muslim” had been “Roman Catholic” or “Scientologist” or “vegan.”
When was the last time you heard someone in the military — or anywhere else for that matter — say “I’m a Roman Catholic first and an American second.” Only a Muslim would put Islam first, because it’s not just a religion, it’s an entire ideology, and one that is not compatible with any secular democracy or with any other religion either.

UPDATE: Observer45, a commenter to Cosh’s article, says I have “fanatic prejudices” and that I’m spewing “odious bigotry.” My comment: “If you choose to serve in the military — and it is a choice — then your 1st allegiance should absolutely be to your country.” His response: “Says you. Why do you get to dictate to everyone else what their personal religious priorities are?”
Sigh. It’s not me that says so, it’s the U.S. Military’s Oath of Enlistment that says so. I just wish the military would dump the PC hogwash and do a better job of weeding out people of ALL religions and ALL belief systems, when their beliefs conflict so egregiously with the Oath.

The shit will be hitting the fan, Jason has revamped the new Canadian citizenship booklet. It includes Canada’s military history. If you read the old one made up by the liberals, you would understand why terrorist see Canada as a an easy mark. The left are going to go bonkers. Finally Canadians will no longer be portrayed as the ballless wonders of the world. That by-election in Quebec putting a tory in, gave me glee. When I was down there last summer visiting family, I was pleasantly surprised on how the liberal brand is dying in the rural communities.
I’ve grumbled about the Conservatives acting more like liberals, but Jason Kenney really stands out as an excellent example for his party. I’d like to see even bigger changes to Canada’s immigration policies, but I’m sure it all takes time.
And speaking of Liberals dying, McParland has this commentary over at the National Post. In the comments, I added this link: Bruce MacKinnon’s Editorial Cartoon.
“he and other students worried about Hasan, not because Islam is incompatible with being a good American, but because “he would frequently say that he was Muslim first and an American second.”
I’m a Christian. I consider that declaration of personal guidence and faith to be above my political or national identity, but my Christian belief is not incompatible with being a good citizen of a confederal union in a free liberal democracy under the rule of law premised upon the Judeo-Christian ethic and the social contract of constituted individual natural right.
However recently we see the secular state attacking Christian beliefs and prosecuting them as incompatible with some new unstated civil creedo – at the same time the open intolerance, hatreds and incitement to violence by radical Islaists is NOT prosecuted by this new national ethos.
I know I have not changed over the decades so it must be Canada ( or its new quasi-justice segment) is incompatible
…my Christian belief is not incompatible with being a good citizen of a confederal union in a free liberal democracy…
I like that — good statement. And, as someone pointed out to me in the comments over at the NP, those freaks with the Westboro Baptist Church would definitely put their faith ahead of their country, but then I wouldn’t expect them to volunteer for military duty.
Really, I think there are many in the military who would agree with you, Bill, and they wouldn’t feel their beliefs were incompatible with their duties as well.
Moosie, you ain’t alone. Many are shaking off the crippling self destructive shackles of multicult political correctness and are allowing the facts and demonstrated behaviour of radical islam give them back thier critical reasoning.
I was astounded to hear the people phoning in to talk shows these last few days who want this islamic jihad deported from the US. There were also a lot of swing voters who voted for hopey-changey who were calling hid action on the Ft. Hood Jihad traitorous.
As for WHY this ticking time bomb (who was obviously under tight Federal surveillence and a domestic terror suspect) Hasan was allowed to be at large and have full access to weapons.
Is it just coincidence BO was having a hard time with support falling away with his committment to undefinate military intervention in the ME?
Was this incident a perfectly timed reminder of ‘the war on terror’ which theDEms erased from the pages of the Obama media?
I don’t know, it still seems to me that Jihadi Denial Syndrome is in full force. Look at this Apologist for Evil.
That is the problem with islam there is no divide between cult and state, they are one in the same. That is why islam is so dangerous, and should not be tolerated in civilized countries. It should not even be classed as a religion, because of its dehumanizing barbaric qualities. The koran is one great big book of hate literature and how to implement it.
