Letter on Climategate sent to Canada’s PM and the opposition

by Tasha on Friday, December 18, 2009, 11:09 pm · 16 comments

As the disaster in Denmark winds down, I thought you might enjoy this excellent letter written by a reader with 29 years experience as a researcher. Peter sent his letter to the PMO and to the Leader of the Opposition.

Dear Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition:

I am writing to declare my complete opposition to Canada ratifying any
treaty based on scientific reports emanating from the United Nations
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

I have 29 years experience as a research assistant in the field of
Quaternary (Ice Age) Paleontology and Paleo Environments. During that
time I have closely followed the AGW debate and have become steadily
disheartened by the activities of all four of the UN’s Climate Research
Units as well as the IPCC itself for politicising the science.

In 1995, Dr. Michael Mann released his famous ‘hockey stick’ graph to
the world, which was featured in the first IPCC report and formed in
large part, the basis for the Kyoto treaty. Subsequently, Steve
McIntyre et. al. have shown the graph to be false and that the data
underpinning it was manipulated to show a specific effect.
Recently, hacked emails from the Hadley CRU at East Anglia University
in Britain were made public and in my professional opinion, appear to
show a concerted effort by CRU scientists to manipulate and or destroy
temperature data, corrupt the peer review process in favour of the AGW
theory and engage in violations of British FOI legislation.

I ask that the Government of Canada request a full independent and
external investigation of the UN’s Climate Research Units to determine
whether the reports submitted by the CRU’s to the IPCC have any
scientific credibility.

Any treaty signed at Copenhagen by Canada or indeed by any other nation
must be based on accurate and verifiable scientific data and that all
studies and their conclusions must be replicated by second parties to
confirm the theory and effect of AGW. The economic and social
consequences are enormous and that responsibility lies squarely on
parlimentarian’s shoulders.

We, in the scientific community are celebrating the 200th anniversary
of the birth of Charles Darwin and his great gift to humanity. The
scientific method.

If you, as parlimentarians, do not challenge the UN to get to the
bottom of this scandal, the reputation of the scientific community as a
whole and climate science specifically will be permanently damaged by
giving credibility to the charlatans and alchemists of this world.

In closing, I would like to paraphrase the great Charles Darwin.

‘In the end, I was compelled to let the facts speak for themselves.’

Sincerely yours.

Peter Milot
Assistant Curator of Paleontology

And here is his response from the PMO (CC’d to the Minister of the Environment):

On behalf of the Prime Minister, thank you for your correspondence regarding the Government’s climate change strategy. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

As we approach the Copenhagen climate change conference, the Government of Canada fully appreciates that Canadians are eager to share their suggestions and opinions on this issue.

You may be assured that your message has been carefully reviewed. As the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment, will also appreciate being made aware of your views, I have taken the liberty of forwarding a copy of your message to the Minister.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write.

P. Monteith
Executive Correspondence Officer

Agent de correspondance
de la haute direction
pour le Cabinet du Premier ministre

As for Mr. Ignatieff…no reply.

Thank you very much, Peter, for taking the time to write the government and for passing along your letter for me to post here.

I’ve done what I can.
I have no idea whether Jim Prentice saw my letter.
I can only take solice in that it was forwarded to his office.
I spoke up and will continue to do so.
With Copenhagan stalled, there is a window of opportunity to pressure the government to open a public inquiry into the Climategate scandal.
My hope is the establishment of a protocol that vets whatever the UN IPCC puts forward.
In my opinion, AGW is happening.
The problem is we don’t know how much of a threat it is or isn’t.

I advocate finding out.

Thank you very much, Peter. You’re right — there needs to be a public inquiry. Hopefully that will happen now.

Why is it unfortunate to receive a standard reply? Does no one believe that the PM and the Environment Minister were briefed on the vast amounts of mail they were receiving?
Of course they were and it’s naive to expect a ‘personal’ response.
We cannot ever quit writing, ever.

I think it’s more telling that no one so far that I have spoken too, received a response from Ignatieff.

4 MooseandSquirrel December 19, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Exactly, Bec! They most certainly take notice especially when there’s a large volume of mail. I think they realize that people who are motivated enough to write are also quite likely to be motivated enough to vote them out if they don’t listen.

I received the same form letter myself, twice, from the PM’s office. No response at all to the letters sent to Prentice.

Moosie said: “if you write enough letters often enough, those in charge start to take notice.”

The more a government ignores you the less they fear you.

A government which fears the retribution of the public is a Democracy
A government which does not fear the public is a tyranny.

7 Bill Elder December 19, 2009 at 10:13 am

Wonderfully pointed letter. The response tells me communications to the PM from party members and constituents is still being intercepted (stopped) by PMO flunkies and hacks (Remember the Schreiber affair stareted from this PMO correspondence intercepting). Harper does not run a responsive open door democracy. This reply is a trite dismissal of anyone outside the CPC expert advisory clique, having a valid opinion on public policy. The Harper government has made policy in a total vacuum and this obviously still continues.

The letter does provide us (thank you very much for sharing this Peter) with a reasonable premise we can move forward with. That being, that we demand the data justifying AGW policy be 3rd party challenged and proven sound before one dime of tax is moved from this nation to unelected climate change bureaucracy.

Seeing how Harper is being elusive and unresponsive to climategate revelations we should also include a stick with the carrot of reelection. We should tell him any federal government that submits us to an international tax regime premised on disputable/fraudulent science will be sued by a citizen class action.

Thanks again for sharing this Peter – tells me a lot about the PMO and PM.

It does sound as though Peter’s response from the PMO was their standard form mail response (see Neil’s comment) But at least some of you got responses. Like Bob, I received no response. I really appreciate people with Peter’s credentials taking the time to write.

Actually, I thank all of you for writing and letting your elected officials know what you think. Like Pat said, this is just one battle — it’s not over yet.

I don’t have a background in science, but common sense tells me how dumb the whole “stop climate change” mantra sounds. However, thanks to the leaked climate data from the CRU at East Anglis, we no longer have to rely on our “beliefs” — we have the manipulated data that proves AGW was always a sham.

And to any eco-freaks who may be reading this…I am not anti-environment. I believe in reducing waste and reducing pollution. But CO2 is not a pollutant and it never was. If you “greenies” want a green planet, then you need CO2.

My advice is we don’t let up: Keep writing letters. Write to the American government as well. Write to the IPCC. We don’t want their one-world government based on junk science.

WE DEMAND AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION INTO THE FRAUD THAT HAS BEEN PERPETRATED AGAINST HUMANITY!

9 old white guy December 19, 2009 at 6:49 am

they don’t read anything. they send a form reply and that is all. any decision made is made and what canadians have to say is irrelevant.

10 MooseandSquirrel December 19, 2009 at 7:35 am

I beg to differ — we need to deal in volume. They will pay attention if they think it means their cushy jobs are on the line in the next election. Just look stateside and see how the Dems in Congress are sweating right now.

Also, if you write enough letters often enough, those in charge start to take notice. Case in point: I’ve written so frequently to Jason Kenney that now I’m on his mailing list. Mostly I’ve written to praise the job he’s doing — though I have had a couple gripes.

And that’s another thing — we don’t just need to write when we have a complaint. If there’s a politician who’s said or done something you agree with and feel strongly about — let him or her know. I wrote Keith Martin (Liberal MP in BC) to thank him for his private member’s bill on calling for the elimination of Section 13 in Canada’s Human Rights Act. I don’t agree with his politics; I’ll never vote for his party — plus I live in Ontario…Still, he deserved thanks for his stance on that issue.

11 Patsplace December 19, 2009 at 1:55 am

Good to see that he got a reply. I didn’t get any replies to the letters I sent urging the same things, but without the credibility enjoyed by Peter. Great that they’re at least reading them. The war is not over, this is just one of the battles.

I also sent a letter regarding climate change to my MP thinking it would at least result in at least a reply.(that never came) I have no where near the credentials of Peter but I did learn in grade 8 the rudimentary workings of our planet. I also realize that because of what I learned and subsequently read about over the years that the global warming and climate change crap that was ingested by the general public via the MSM was a bunch of crap.

This leads me to believe that after all these years of trying my best, paying way to much in taxes but carrying on anyway and seeing what right now looks like a bleak future for my grand & great grandchildren I wasted my life.

We are letting a bunch of stupid politicians change our country into a third world entity with laws that will cripple what industry we have left with laws based on false information and what that does not accomplish will be looked after be the Islamic infestation of our nation by a bunch of Muslims that everyone is afraid to offend.

I SURE WISH MY CANADA WAS MORE LIKE THE ONE I GREW UP IN.

13 Christopher December 19, 2009 at 1:36 am

Well done. I also initiated a similar message to the PM. Tonight, I attempted to call his office with my outrage. But, it seems we are no longer able to call the PM. Shame!!!

I’m not a climate scientist but I also wrote the Prime Minister and this is the response I received on the 27th of November:

Office of the Prime Minister / Cabinet du Premier ministre

Mr. Prime Minister,
please stand up for the majority of Canadians who do NOT believe in the Global Warming scam by refusing to attend the upcoming conference in Copenhagen.
In the past you have indicated a belief that this is a wealth transfer scam and it is. It’s time to stand up and be counted.

This letter is particularly apropos in light of two articles posted on the National Post website. In one of the articles, Lawrence Solomon, describes how one of the climate change propagandists changed thousands of articles on Wikipedia. In fact, one of the major proponents of this voodoo science even managed to get himself set up as an editor for climate change papers. Not only was the the tenor of the submissions altered to reflect a more positive view of the present climate change orthodoxy, but submittals by those in opposition were denied and the authors were banned from having any of their comments posted on Wikipedia.
Terrance Corcoran, in a second editorial, describes the long chain of events that form a cohesive thread through the thousands of e-mails that came from the ‘scientists’ at East Anglia University and other institutions. These threads demonstrate how researchers, far from being convinced about the data, were slowly coerced into following the catechism as laid down by the IPCC.
The articles are truly terrifying in that they demonstrate how a small number of zealots can, through the electronic medium and coupled with a desire to indoctrinate the public, influence the populace to accept theoretical science that is not supported by any testable data.

Next time my family is at the excellent Royal Alberta Museum, I hope my kids can meet Peter and shake his hand! They love the live bugs the most, then the dinosaurs.

Unfortunately it sounds like he got a form email response. Maybe he should call his MP up (unless he is unfortunate to live in the one NDP riding in the whole province) and give them the letter up close and personal.
