…What do you think this guy’s sentence would have been?
Detroit teen sentenced to 53 years for shooting Windsor cop
The Detroit teen who shot Windsor, Ont., police officer Tom Rettig in an attempted carjacking last year was sentenced Tuesday morning to at least 53 years in prison.
David Laston, 19, will not be eligible for parole until he is 72 years old.
And this from the judge in the case:
Judge Jackson noted Laston had been before him previously on similar charges. Due to Laston’s youth, Judge Jackson chose at the time not to send him to prison.
The shooting of Const. Rettig occurred less than six months later. “Regardless of how one may look at it, I tend to think, ‘Well, did I make a mistake?’” Judge Jackson said. “In hindsight, I think that . . . it’s very possible that someone could have lost their life because I did not look at things the way I should have in the first place.”
Well, I think the judge redeemed himself here. This scumbag got what he deserved, and with that attitude of his, I doubt he’ll live to see his parole date.
But I did wonder what his sentence would have looked like had he committed the same crime in Canada. My first thought was maybe five years? Ten at the most — less time already served, of course. Turns out my first guess was probably the closest.

“A bad combination of prescription Ritalin, for Caron’s attention deficit disorder, with alcohol and cocaine fuelled his uncharacteristic behaviour”
Ah, you forgot to mention the extenuating circumstances! The real villain in this tragic story is the SOB who forced that poor to take all those drugs!
And don’t forget, in Canada he’ll be up for parole WAY before he’d be in the USA. I’d bet on him being back in the streets within 3 years, maybe even less if he has a bleeding heart parole board.
Canada’s hopeless…Not that I think the U.S. is a great model of justice. After all, they’re trying terrorists in civilian courts.
Thinking this punk was in a gang and probably an enforcer for said gang. Even if I’m wrong, up here in Canada they would feel sorry for the guy because he decided to cut school to make a few grand cash a week and snog chicks every other day. Ride around and commit petty crimes while high and laughing their heads off. Yeah, society forced him into that kind of boring ‘it’s all about me’ lifestyle.
Yes, typical Canadian justice system — it would be all about feeling sorry for him.
Yeah – but
But now we have to feed, cloth, entertain and house this scumbag for the the next 53 years during which time he will assimilate in to “lifer” prison culture and become a life long drug dependent pervert or killer or victim – that is a form of torture for both the crook and the public.
It’s times like this I realize how humane capital punishment was.
With his attitude, I think it’s likely someone bigger and tougher in prison will off the little punk.
