Well, let’s tell TPTB to assume the position so we can “light up” their lives with these costly, inefficient, and highly poisonous products:
…the bulbs should not be left on for extended periods, particularly near someone’s head, as they emit poisonous materials when switched on. [...]
But the German scientists claimed that several carcinogenic chemicals and toxins were released when the environmentally-friendly compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were switched on, including phenol, naphthalene and styrene.
They’re robbing us of the choice to use perfectly safe incandescent bulbs, which emit a much more pleasant light, and forcing a dangerous product on us instead. Can anybody in government say “class action lawsuit”? Okay, you’re probably thinking, “Well, there are other choices like LED, for instance.” The cost to equip most homes with LED bulbs would be prohibitive for many people. When they finally take away our freedom to choose incandescent bulbs (thank an eco-hippy for me by giving him a swift kick), CFLs will be the most affordable option.
Now, why do I call CFLs inefficient? Because they are. They take too long to warm up, and they don’t work well in the cold. We found that out when we had them in our garage. They lasted about a week before we gave up and went back to bulbs that actually work! Plus, CFLs don’t live up to their promise of being longer-lasting. And in colder climates — d’uh, like Canada — using CFLs in winter will mean your furnace will have to work harder. So much for energy and CO2 savings!
Besides the poisons emitted by these bulbs, there’s also the fire/explosion danger:
A compact fluorescent light (CFL) on the ceiling burst and started a fire in a home in Hornell, N.Y. December 23, 2010. “Those are the lights everybody’s been telling us to use,” said Joe Gerych, Steuben County Fire Inspector. “It blew up like a bomb. It spattered all over.” Fire Chief Mike Robbins said the blaze destroyed the room where the fire started and everything in it, and the rest of the house suffered smoke and water damage…
So why is all this bullshit being forced upon us? Well, cue: Lord Monckton: End of Magna Carta!
