Ever more quickly now, the rats are deserting the sinking ship:
John Les, parliamentary secretary to the premier and Chilliwack MLA, announced Thursday he won’t seek re-election in the May provincial election. Education minister George Abbott and children and family development minister Mary McNeil are also expected to announce they are calling it quits. [...]
The three resignations come less than 24 hours after former finance minister Kevin Falcon stepped down from cabinet and said he won’t be running in the spring.
Besides the fact that the unpopular Liberals here probably stand little chance of being re-elected, I wonder how much the resignations have to do with this fact, amongst other details that the MSM has ignored.

How many more have to resign before Liberals lose gov’t standing?
That’s a good question — maybe there’ll be an election sooner than Clark planned? She must realize by now there’s little chance of her re-election.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it’s up to the GG to decide if any particular Government has lost the confidence of the House, and may then call the Premier in for a ‘chat’… (?)
You probably are correct. And from what I’ve been hearing in the news, it’s not unusual for MLAs to jump ship when their ship is sinking — re: NDP here in 2001 (I think).
So, I guess it’ll be a spring election and Dix as the new premier. Pretty much a done deal, I’d say…
A news clip had Christy explaining that she’d asked the caucus members to declare their intentions early (now!) re standing for re-election. I’m not sure she was expecting them to stand…and walk.
It’s actually a good time to bail if you’ve been around for a couple of terms; soft landings await I’m sure.
Soft landing for sure… I should have been a politician, except I’ve never been a good ass-kisser, and I make an even worse liar — which is why I don’t play poker either.
Actually, DaninVan, my point wasn’t about GG (provincial) calling on someone else to form gov’t, I was referring to how much of a majority the BC Libs have. Eg if Dalton (Ont) has a couple more MPPs resign/leave and his party doesn’t win those seats back in byelections, there goes his slim majority. Think Paul Martin/Belinda Stronach & non-confidence vote.
Candace; yeh, sorry, I wasn’t clear on which way you were going with that. These resignations are a nightmare for Clark. I’m pretty sure she just wanted to know if any of her caucus weren’t planning on running again…resignations must have been a kick to the gut.
I doubt she’ll call bye-bye elections before the main event.
BC provincial politics are almost as farked up as Quebec’s – I said “almost”
